Are you planning to do a cleanse or detox to start the new year? When we are ready to do a cleanse we choose juice fasting as our way because the juice provides the nutrients we need and allows us to continue with our daily routine.
The first week is the hardest. Some people give up during this time. Here are three keys to getting through your first 7 days.
Start BEFORE you start.
Are you tempted to binge on your favorite things? Before you even begin your fast you should be tapering down what you eat. Eat less food. Gradually eliminate the heavier foods. Stop eating any animal products at least three days before your fast begins. Stop eating cooked food two days before. And eliminate all nuts, seeds and oils on the day before.
Tapering will allow your mind and body to adjust gradually.
Time your fast so that you will have at least three days at home. Use this time to rest. This is likely to be most uncomfortable time. You may get a headache. You may be irritable. You may be tired. Allow time for this and let yourself pass through this stage in the comfort of your own home with as little stress as possible.
Lend a helping hand
The purpose of all this is to allow your body to clean itself. You can help by supporting your natural purging mechanisms.
- Drink LOTS of water. You want your urine to be almost clear.
- Keep the bowels moving. You can do an enema daily or start the day with 12-16 oz of water with the juice of 1/2 lemon.
- Use a dry body brush to exfoliate from head to toe each day.
