From Veggie Envy to Vegan Lifestyle

Before I became a vegan my life was very different. I was overweight and watching the scale creep higher every year. Even when I tried to lose weight and get in shape I couldn't get the results I wanted. I sweated and pumped iron and walked, but the weight and fat stayed in place.

In my mid forties, I began worrying more and more about my health. I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, cancer. Each time I experienced some new symptom or went for my check ups I worried about what terrible disease might be lurking.

I was still experiencing acne. I had horrible acne as a teen and my oily skin, while helping to keep my skin wrinkle free, meant blackheads and pimples still at age 47.

Me in 2004

I suffered from headaches since childhood as well and would have several days a month with pounding headaches. I had bouts with constipation and hemorrhoids.

I was headed towards a fate that is quite common in today's world. A gradual decline in health and an increase of medications, ailments and aches and pains.

Thankfully, Dr. Nana Kwaku Opare showed me a way to restore my health. Today I feel in many ways even better than I did in my youth.

For many years I knew that a vegetarian lifestyle was probably healthier. I had vegetarian envy. I would give it a try for a bit but it didn't last long. Somehow I could never stick to it. I didn't have support at home, and I didn't really know how to sustain it. I also didn't know how bad my diet really was.

Dr. Opare told me in very clear terms what the dangers of eating animal products is. I learned about the toll processed food takes on our health. I learned what a vegan eats and how delicious the food can be. And I learned how much better I could feel and look in a very short period of time.

I made the commitment to do it this time.

I was surprised at how easy it was. And I was amazed at how good I felt and how the weight fell off within a few weeks.
My skin cleared up. My headaches became less severe and less frequent. All of the health concerns I was having began to disappear or dramatically improve.

Today I can't imagine going back. I am healthier and happier than ever. I enjoy my food and have learned about so many new and delicious options.

I just signed up for Food FOR the Soul updates. I came across your book when I went to visit the Loving it Live restaurant in East Point, Ga. I was also introduced to Dr. Nana Opare’s book “The Rule Book and User Guide For Healthy Living. I read the foreword and he author’s foreword and realized I need to do something about my health. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and would love to get off this medicine and feel better because sometimes I feel like it does a number on me. I attend Clayton State University and just saw a sign stating that October is vegetarian month. Maybe this is a sign that I should change my eating habits. I will definitely try starting October 1, 2015 to eat more vegetables and restrain from eating meat for the whole month and see what happens. I was 185 lbs in June 2014 and now I’m 150lbs. however I still need to eat a little better. I lost weight by eating more fruits and veggies and most of all not eating late and laying down immediately afterwards. It doesn’t help that I work at a BBQ restaurant. I find that this was not as much of an issue as I thought because I can count on my hand how many times I’ve ate there and I have worked there for 2 years. I just need to be a little more discipline and stay away from sweets like pastries and potato chips because these things are my weaknesses. Wish me luck. I will start tomorrow. After reading your story, you have encouraged me to at least try and adapt a vegan lifestyle.
